Swinger vs Polyamory vs FWB: What's the Real Difference?
The Barber Who Accidentally Booked This Episode
Every great episode starts somewhere. This one started in a barber's chair. Adam went in for a cleanup, and mid-fade his barber — a loyal listener, bless his heart — confessed he had absolutely no idea what the difference was between swinging and polyamory. And honestly? He's not alone. Half the lifestyle can't tell you either. So this week on Beyond Monogamy, your favorite swinger podcast finally tackles the ethical non-monogamy taxonomy nobody hands you a field guide for: swinger vs. poly vs. friends with benefits.
The good news: Adam and Pris have personally lived all three. The better news: they did at least two of them badly, which makes for way better radio.
Pris Before Adam: The Origin Story
Pris kicks things off with some real talk about her pre-Adam lifestyle years — when she knew exactly what swinging was, wasn't jealous, and still settled for way less than she deserved. "I didn't know my worth," she admits, looking back at an era when she could have been, in her words, taken care of like a princess. There's also a confession about enjoying her experiences most when her then-partner was, shall we say, unavailable due to beverage-related circumstances. It's raw, it's honest, and it's exactly the kind of origin story that explains why communication is now their whole brand.
Five Years of Poly (and a Parade of Red Flags)
Then we get into the main event: Adam and Pris were polyamorous for about five years, and by their own admission, they were the couple your poly friends warned you about. Unicorn hunting? Check. Recruiting a vanilla friend going through a divorce? Check. "We were really trying to shine up this turd" is an actual quote from this episode, and frankly it belongs on a t-shirt (Pris makes the merch, so… manifesting).
Pris even pitches a new product idea: a little button that waves a tiny red flag every time you're being the red flag. Somebody get this woman a patent attorney, because the demand is out there.
Here's the part that'll hit home for a lot of you: they didn't understand that polyamory means an actual, whole-a** romantic relationship. Multiple loves. Real ones. "I saw the words on the page, but it just didn't register," Adam says. If you've ever watched a swinger couple announce they're "going poly" and thought hmm, this seems underbaked — this episode is your validation.
The Girlfriend Who Texted Too Much
Adam tells the story of his last poly girlfriend, which begins hot and heavy and ends with him hiding in a work bathroom while his phone buzzes like an angry hornet. "I already have a good marriage. I'm good, thanks" is the moment the whole FWB thesis was born. Meanwhile, Pris had an admirer of her own — a woman who spoiled her with gifts, lunches, vacation offers, and the AirPods that gave Adam his first-ever taste of jealousy. Not because of the romance. Because he'd been saving up for those exact AirPods. Compersion is beautiful, but apparently it has a price, and that price is $199 plus tax.
Plot Twist: Most "Poly-Curious" Swingers Actually Want FWB
Here's the big realization of the episode, and honestly of their last several years: a lot of swingers who think they want polyamory don't want a second romantic relationship at all. They don't want the daily texting, the obligatory phone calls, the boyfriend homework. What they want is a friend — a real one — who you can joke with, flirt with, trust, and occasionally enjoy some freaky fun time with. No strings, no anniversaries, no "why didn't you call me back."
That's friends with benefits, and Adam plants his flag on it hard. Pris took longer to come around — poly left some bruises — but she's arrived, and she explains exactly what changed her mind. If you and your partner are anywhere on the swinger-to-poly spectrum and not 100% sure where you land, this section alone is worth the listen.
Don't. Say. Date.
And then there's the instant-classic segment where Adam and Pris try to find a replacement for the word "date," because for Pris, "date" means romance, and romance is for husbands. Adam — who owned a thesaurus in his youth because he wanted to be a rapper, a fact that made Pris measurably hotter for him mid-show — runs through the options live: rendezvous (too romantic), tryst (gross), liaison (implies secrecy), assignation (absolutely not, despite Adam putting the "ass" in it). The winner: meetup. Spelled M-E-A-T, if Adam's going. That's communication, people. That's working out your shit.
Sacred Rules & Future Plans
The episode closes with the stuff long-term couples in the lifestyle will feel in their bones: the rules they hold sacred (no vacations with other people, no showering with other people — unless it's content, because business is business), the hierarchy conversation that ruffles poly feathers, menopause navigation, and whether the empty-nest years might bring something deeper — maybe even dating another couple, bromance included. Plus a shout-out to Myrina and Nick of The Accidental Swingers, proof that sometimes poly just happens organically when you're not forcing it.
It's funny, it's vulnerable, and it might just save you five years of learning things the hard way.
