Swinger Dynamics 101: Full Swap, Soft Swap & Knowing Your No

Swinger Dynamics 101: Full Swap, Soft Swap & Knowing Your No

Somebody said it again this week. Somebody always says it. Adam went to give the disclaimer — the one where he explains that he and Pris are not, in fact, licensed relationship professionals — and what came out of his mouth was “we are not licensed therapists, counselors, or sex couches.”

Sex couches. Not sex coaches. Sex couches. Which, honestly, might be a more useful credential for this lifestyle anyway.

That’s the energy of this week’s Wednesday Quickie, and it doesn’t let up. Adam and Pris sat down to answer the question they get asked constantly by people new to the swinger lifestyle and ethical non-monogamy (ENM) in general: “What’s your dynamic?”

Wait, What’s a “Dynamic”?

If you’re newer to the scene, here’s the short version: your dynamic is the shorthand for what you’re actually into. Full swap or soft swap. Same room or same roof or fully separate. Solo play allowed or absolutely not. It’s the label that keeps you from spending three weeks getting to know a couple only to find out you wanted completely different things the whole time.

Adam and Pris didn’t always talk this way. Early on, they admit they didn’t even have the vocabulary for it — they just kind of figured it out as they went, the hard way, by wasting time with people who weren’t on the same page. Now? Dynamics get discussed early, discussed often, and revisited constantly, because — plot twist — a dynamic isn’t a contract. It’s a living, breathing, mood-dependent thing.

“It’s Very Fluid” (Their Words, Not Ours… Okay, Also Ours)

Pris drops one of the more honest lines of the episode when she explains that her comfort level has way less to do with the guy in the equation and everything to do with a vibe she can’t always name about the woman. Not insecurity, she’s quick to clarify — everyone involved is gorgeous, that’s not the issue. It’s just a gut-level thing, and it shifts. Same room one night, separate rooms the next. Adam calls it “situational.” Pris calls it “wavy.” We’re calling it relatable, because anyone who’s ever tried to plan literally anything with another human being knows the vibes do not care about your calendar.

Which brings us to Adam’s glow-up of the episode: he used to treat every hookup opportunity like it was a limited-time offer expiring at midnight. Somebody’s interested? Gotta seal the deal immediately or the universe will snatch it away forever. These days he’s recalibrated — if it’s meant to happen, it’ll happen whether it’s next week or next month, and if someone can’t handle a little patience, that tells him everything he needs to know. Bonus points to Pris for the related PSA: if someone starts pestering you the second you don’t move fast enough, that’s not eagerness, that’s a red flag wearing a name tag. Automatic no.

The Calendar Is Law

Here’s a rule for your back pocket: according to Adam, the only way to know something is actually happening is if you get a screenshot of the calendar with your name in it. Not on the calendar? No guarantee. It’s not personal — it’s two working adults with kids, cars that don’t always start, and bank accounts that occasionally say “absolutely not” to a dinner date. Real life doesn’t pause for the lifestyle, and Adam and Pris are refreshingly upfront that sometimes you just have to text “can’t right now, let’s reschedule” — and whoever cancels should be the one to circle back if they actually mean it.

Adam Cannot Say No. Pris Can.

This might be the most quotable segment of the whole episode. Adam fully admits he is constitutionally incapable of telling people no — he’s working on it, he swears — so Pris has become the designated bad guy. Or, as she puts it, the person in charge of “denying women his dick.” A job she has, by her own admission, gotten extremely good at.

But underneath the joke is something genuinely useful: both of their feelings are valid, but that doesn’t mean they carry equal weight in every single moment. Adam’s learned to pick his battles instead of pushing his agenda, and Pris has learned to say “I’m sitting on it, let me process” instead of swallowing her discomfort until it detonates later. That’s not swinger advice. That’s just good relationship advice with better anecdotes.

The Menopause Talk Nobody Else Is Having

Then things get real for a second, in the best way. Pris gets candid about being 48 and deep in menopause — the hormones, the moods, the days where even a simple conversation feels like defusing a bomb. Adam turns it into something useful for the audience: he hears from guys constantly whose wives are perimenopausal and worried that means the lifestyle is off the table. Spoiler from two people who’ve lived it: it’s not off the table. It takes more patience, more communication, and yes, probably a doctor’s visit — but it’s absolutely still possible.

Two Words: Team Sport

The episode lands on the theme that ties the whole thing together — you have to work as a team. Wingman for each other, translator for each other, occasional bodyguard against the guy at the club who says the wrong thing within earshot (RIP his chances the second Pris hears it). Whatever’s happening between the two of them comes first, every time, before anyone else gets a look-in. It’s not the sexiest part of the lifestyle, but it might be the most important one.

Bottom Line

Next time someone asks what you’re “into,” skip the vague answer. Tell them your dynamic. Write it down if you have to. Adam and Pris just handed you the vocabulary — go use it.
