Our First Swinger Experiences: Everything We Did Wrong

Our First Swinger Experiences: Everything We Did Wrong

Every couple in the swinger lifestyle has an origin story. Some are sexy. Some are sweet. Ours involves a Halloween party, way too much alcohol, a bedroom door closing in Adam's face, and a full year of "wait, are we actually doing this?" conversations. This week on Beyond Monogamy, a listener couple hit our anonymous confessional with the question we somehow never fully answered in fifteen years: what were your first experiences actually like?

Buckle up, buttercup. It's confession time — and this time, WE'RE the ones confessing.

The Halloween Party That Wasn't

Picture it: a house party, costumes, libations flowing like the Mississippi River, and two people who had spent a year talking about opening their relationship but were — spoiler alert — on two completely different pages. Adam had his eye on a girl he describes, with the honesty only hindsight allows, as "more attainable than anything else." Pris noticed. Pris did not love it. Nobody talked about it, because talking is for sober people, and nobody at this party qualified.

Enter a flirty friend who backed Pris into the kitchen with the classic "well, I'M into girls" opener. Next thing you know, the two of them are headed to the bedroom, Adam's trailing behind like an excited golden retriever — and then Pris pushes him out of the room. "No, this is for me. You need to go."

Now here's the twist: present-day Adam would LOVE that. Present-day Adam would be outside doing a happy little dance. But rookie Adam didn't have a name for the butterflies in his stomach yet, so his brain filed them under "this man has been DISRESPECTED," and he marched back in and broke up the party. Cue one of the biggest arguments of their entire relationship, and a first experience so rough they didn't even talk about it for a couple of YEARS.

The lesson, written in flaming letters: don't start drunk, don't start uncommunicated, and don't start on two different wavelengths. That's the whole starter kit, folks.

The First Guest Star

After the Great Halloween Disaster came the rebuild: more talking, actual boundaries (sober play, sober partners), and eventually a carefully selected single gentleman from the old-school sites — SLS, Adult FriendFinder, the ancestral hunting grounds. Muscular guy. Got his gym time in. Also got his nerves in, because when the moment arrived, his, uh, enthusiasm did not.

Meanwhile Adam was having a religious experience in the corner, discovering in real time that watching his wife with someone else was very much his thing. And Pris? Pris was somewhere else entirely — mentally checked out, disconnected, doing this mostly for Adam and not yet able to say so. It took years and a lot of hard conversations to unpack that one, and it's one of the realest parts of this episode: sometimes the person saying yes isn't actually ready, and if they're not vocalizing what they want, you might not find out until much later.

Silver lining: the debrief afterwards lasted, and we quote, "all weekend." Possibly all week. The homework was thorough.

Visual Cyanide

Then it was Adam's turn with another woman — a coworker (rule broken), a vanilla (rule broken), doing it for the wrong reasons (red flag bingo!). Things were going fine until Adam finished, recharged, and went for round two without checking in with his wife. The face Pris made from the other side of the bed is described in the episode as "visual cyanide." If looks could kill, Adam would have been incinerated on the spot, and honestly, your honor, Pris had a case.

Adam's actual internal monologue: "Well, I'm already in trouble. Might as well enjoy this one." Gentlemen: do not do this. This is a cautionary tale, not a playbook.

The Swap That Worked (and the One That REALLY Didn't)

Their first full swap? The very same couple from the Halloween party — benefit of the doubt granted, everyone sober this time — and it was fantastic. So fantastic that they're still favorites to this day, and the ladies still run the same con: get the guys handled early so girl time can commence. Some traditions are sacred.

The second couple, though. Oh, the second couple. A gorgeous historic mansion with roughly nine thousand steps to the front door. Antiques. Money. Class. And then, upstairs: a woman who is ticklish EVERYWHERE, who laughs — hysterically, maniacally, like the Joker from the first Batman — through the entire act, while occasionally doing a velociraptor air-bite and pawing across the bed. Meanwhile, on the other side of that same bed, Pris was enduring her own catastrophe that we will let her explain on the show, because some things need to be heard in her voice.

They got dressed, skedaddled, and laughed the entire drive home. And weeks later, Adam discovered this couple's homemade videos out in the wild — and recognized them instantly by the bedroom décor and, yes, the muffled laughing. Legends, in their own way.

What We'd Actually Tell New Couples

Underneath all the chaos, this episode is really for the couple who wrote in — and every couple standing at the edge of the pool: over-communicate (if it feels like too much, you're doing it right), vet until you're BOTH comfortable, expect performance nerves and don't take them personally, never one-up your partner to settle a score, and treat jealousy as a feeling to navigate, not a verdict. Adam and Pris did nearly everything wrong on paper and survived because they refused to go to bed mad. Learn from their mistakes so you don't have to earn your own velociraptor story. (Although honestly? You kind of want a velociraptor story.)
