This Kind of Girl: UK Writer Rosie Kay on Non-Monogamy, Bisexuality & Being Unapologetically Yourself

Featuring Rosie Kay of This Kind of Girl

What happens when British wit meets bold honesty about open relationships, bisexuality, and empowerment? You get Rosie Kay — the unapologetic voice behind This Kind of Girl, one of the UK’s most authentic and relatable lifestyle blogs on ethical non-monogamy, sexual freedom, and self-growth.

In this episode of Beyond Monogamy with Adam & Pris, we dig into what it really means to live and love outside the box — the fears, the freedom, the funny bits, and the fierce confidence that comes with owning who you are :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}.

From “That Kind of Girl” to This Kind of Girl

Like many of us, Rosie’s story didn’t start with confidence — it started with curiosity and confusion.

“I didn’t want to cheat on a partner, but I didn’t know how to express it. It just sat with me for years.”

Her journey into non-monogamy began in her early twenties, when being bisexual in a monogamous world felt like trying to breathe through a straw. After one nerve-wracking invitation to a swingers’ club — half terrified, half curious — Rosie stepped into a space that would eventually shape her life’s work.

Fast-forward to the pandemic: lockdown, a kitchen table, and a burning need to write honestly about what she’d learned.

“There was no help online when I started… I thought, there must be other young women out there curious about this. So I just started writing.”

The UK Lifestyle Scene: Not What You Think

Rosie paints a vivid picture of the UK lifestyle: vibrant, diverse, and surprisingly liberated.

“There are clubs in almost every major town, and you can be whoever you want to be… you can walk through Soho in stockings at 2 p.m. and no one cares.”

She also calls out old stereotypes — the cigar-smoking “keys-in-the-bowl” caricature that still lingers in pop culture.

“People still picture the 1980s medallion vibe… they don’t see the mid-20s professionals, the single women, or the LGBTQ+ folks who make up this community.”

Bisexuality, Consent & Real Growth

One of Rosie’s most powerful themes is learning to give — and receive — consent from a place of trust, not control.

“The biggest lesson I learned was giving my consent without needing to be there… I was terrified, but it made us stronger.”

She’s direct about double standards too:

“Single men are unfairly stigmatized… and women aren’t your competition. Your insecurities are the real issue.”

Confidence, Shame & The Persona We Turn On

For someone who teaches self-awareness, Rosie is refreshingly open about being introverted — and about flipping on the public persona when it’s time to work.

“I had to fake it till I made it… heels on, brand on show. The real me is a cat mom who reads paranormal books.”

Building a More Inclusive Community

Rosie’s mission goes beyond pleasure; it’s about creating safer, more compassionate spaces and giving people permission to pursue what actually fits their lives.

“If you want to go to an all-women social, do it. If you want to try something new, do it. You’re in control of your life.”
